I like this alternative mixture that can grow in partial shade to full sun with a mixture of Winter Rye and Wheat. It can tolerate a range of soil ph. You can plant this as late as September 15th in the central states.

Seed coverages based on drilling seed. If using a hand or walk behind spreader, recommend ordering a little extra to get you the coverage you want or add Cover Crop or Cereal Grains as a cover crop to help your chosen seed go far enough to get you the coverage you want.
